In this episode David talks about Pros and cons of building vs buying an AR-15, as well as some tips when dealing with AR-15’s.  Dave has completed several AR-15 build projects and believes that this is a great way to both save money as well as to learn about the AR-15 platform.

If you can build it from a parts kit, then you can replace broken parts.  This puts you ahead of the curve in the gun portion of disaster preparedness.

Its also a great way to get an AR-15 at a great price, as you can save hundreds of dollars if you are building a stock mil-spec rifle.  Alternatively, you can customize and enhance your rifle to get exactly what you want while still saving money compared to buying a fully tricked out rifle complete.

It is very easy to complete an AR-15 build, and the parts are readily accessible.  All you need is common hand tools and a good guide.  It only takes about 30 minutes to put together a complete AR-15 lower if you have read the instructions and have everything you need close at hand.

The show is scheduled for Monday at 10pm central time at this link.

If you cannot listen on Monday, you can always download the podcast for listening at your own leisure.

Clint Smith is an expert on the use of Defensive Firearms.  He is a Marine Corps Infantry vet, SWAT officer, and has been running Thunder Ranch since 1993.

Since I Graduated high school in 1993 I readily admit that he has probably forgot more about defensive firearms use than I know.  And that’s okay with me as I haven’t stopped learning yet.  This video is a great tool use to learn some great concepts and proper mindset on the proper use of a defensive firearm.

I like his style, this thought process, and how he teaches.  When I teach firearms classes, there are several techniques and lessons that I share that I gleaned from Mr. Smith.

I have searched YouTube for good training videos to share, and I have found several clips of Thunder Ranch training videos.  Think of them as advertisements for their full length training videos.  (I don’t gain anything from this, but I do think there videos are a valuable and worthwhile purchase.)

Clint Smith is entertaining, but his content is unparalleled.  I love watching him and have used many of his videos to influence my training style.  Its good to be entertained as you are educated.

Prepper Precepts #2 Don’t Look Forward to Disaster

52 Unique Techniques for Stocking Food for Prepper
52 Unique Techniques for Stocking Food for Prepper

I don’t want the manure to strike the air oscillation device. Hopefully, I won’t ever be told that I was right about prepping. I want my food storage to hit its shelf life unopened. But I feel better knowing I have food insurance.

Don’t look forward to disaster you just might end up getting to be in one.

Rules of Civility: The 110 Precepts that Guided Our First President in War and Peace

These precepts are my creed, and having prepper precepts guides me when I face tough choices. A wise man once told me that when facing a moral problem, the right choice is usually the action you don’t want to take.

I am not a pollyanna person that is wishy washy or blindly follows rules, heck I have a little rebellious streak and love to know the WHY of rules, but I do respect and understand the need for law and know how vital it is for a society to have a moral code.

By knowing what I believe in you can know how I will act. This is very important in times of stress. If you don’t want to read these precepts one by one, the completed list can be found here: Completed 27 Prepper Precepts.

I hope these precepts are useful to you, I feel that by sharing my creed I can, in some little way, help make the world better by opening a discussion about the importance of having rules to live by.

How to Use Orajel for Mosquito Bite Relief

First Aid: Orajel for Mosquito Bites

I heard of using Orajel for Mosquito Bites, and when I tried it I found a sure fix for mosquito bites, at least for me.

I am the kind of person that mosquitoes love to attack, and once bitten they swell up larger than normal.  This means I am always looking for new ways of dealing with the discomfort of bites.

Every time I get bitten by a mosquito, I use Orajel or any toothache gel medicine and it works!

It stops the itching instantly and will not itch again.  It isn’t greasy, sticky, or smelly. It’s convenient to put right in your pocket.  Try it and let me know if it works – also – if you have any mosquito remedies, please share them in the comments…

I am not sure if this works on everybody, but besides helping the itchiness I had from some bites, several other people have commented that it works for them.  I can’t promise anything, and I am not a doctor, but I think you should consider trying to use Orajel for Mosquito Bites.

This is a small little tip that works well.  I keep some orajel in my bugout bag, and my tool kit so I have it whenever I work at the land.

How to Carry Duct Tape While Backpacking

Duct Tape Tip for Backpackers

A common trick among backpackers is to wrap some duct tape around their water bottle or lighter so that they always have a couple feet readily available for quick repairs.  This is an easy duct tape tip that ensures you always have some tape on hand.

I find that having some duct tape with me in the things that I carry everyday helps me stay prepared. When hiking, I can use it on “hotspots” to prevent blisters, and its invaluable for survival when making things like plastic water stills and bags. However, since I spend most of my time in an office, I tend to use my duct tape in more normal ways.

This tip is useful more than just outdoors-men.  I have a cut off ink pen body wrapper with duct tape on a monkey fist hanging from my keys.  In the end, it really does not matter if you wrap duct tape on your keys, lighter, water bottle, or frame of your pack.  What matters is that duct tape is dead useful, but a roll is bulky and heavy.

This simple tip ensures you have some if needed as well as saves weight and space.

This duct tape tip is one of my favorites as it keeps tape close at had for any emergency purpose as well as makes my water bottle easily distinguishable from the ones carried by everyone else.

You can also use this tip on hiking sticks and trekking poles – I even know a handy guide to purchasing trekking poles.
