The con game video comes from the national institute for corrections, and is a very real look into the world of inmate manipulation.

I add it here, because guns and gear are not the only things a disaster resilient person needs to know.

Understanding people is also vital.  Having a strong enough ego that you don’t feel the need to please someone else.

Everybody gets manipulated, if you’ve ever done something not in your best interest then its happened – it does not always need to rise to the occasion of committing a felony like smuggling contraband into a prison to be a con game.

Beware people that seem to like all the same things you do, or who constantly find fault with your friends or tell you what other people are saying about you.  It may not be true.

It is hard to manipulate someone that has friends nearby.  In the club game (and mine is rusty) the nice girl you want to spend time with always seems to have a friend who seems to think its her job to be “mean”.  That mean girl is protecting her friend from the one night stand guys.

In the prison world it is the same way.  Inmates don’t get toilet paper unless a correctional officer brings it to them (not guards – guards ride a segway around a mall).  Inmates need things officers have and they try to manipulate the officer’s feelings to ensure that the inmate gets what they want.

That manipulation could be an attempt at making the officer “like them” or it could be to try to make the offer fear them.  either way – the brotherhood of other officers prevent those feelings from working.

Corrections is a hard profession, it is stressful, thankless, and raw.  You spend a lot of time away from your family and it requires working weekends and holidays.

However, you see things other people just won’t believe, you will build friendships with other officers that rival military friendships built over multiple deployments, and you will learn exactly the kind of person you are.  Many people try it and don’t last because they can’t handle knowing who they are, but for the strong minded – this is a great career.

I love my job, and I love my fellow officers.  I hope this video illustrates one small part of how hard it is to be a correctional officer (C/O) and what a good C/O has to go through.

the C/O profession is part of law enforcement, they are the silent few who use mental strength, determination, and teamwork to control 1200-1500 felons with a staff of 30-50 on shift.  Individual officers supervise up to 128 felons by themselves.  The dangers are different than those faced by our law enforcement family out on the street, but they are no less.

If you think you are strong enough – or want to learn to be mentally tough enough to join this interesting profession and build a career, you can always contact me.  Right now we offer 9 weeks of paid training to teach you about inmate manipulation and more….

*I did not intend this to be a recruitment ad for corrections, I just wanted to share a cool little piece of the profession, but I love my job so much I could not help trying to find more people to join (I am an academy instructor assigned to the field and my job is to prepare officers for the resident academy)
