How to Make Spam Fried Rice
Everyone involved in cheap prepping knows to store rice, beans, and wheat berries, but rice beans and bread WILL get old fast. I plan on setting down some recipes that use basic storage foods only and are still good to eat. My first recipe is Spam fried rice.
Now I know that the name alone will turn some heads and some stomachs, but I live with a very food conscious lady that has a hard time with some of my more adventurous meals. She trusts me implicitly, until I bring a spoonful of some concoction and whisper every so sweetly “do you trust me”… she puts her hand over her mouth and shakes her head. BUT, she gave me a thumbs up on this one, and I cooked it believing it would not be ate by anyone but me…
So to make this series, it has to be made up of food storage foods, be relatively easy to make in a disaster scenario, and the wife has to agree she would eat it more than once.
Spam is basically just sausage without all the good seasonings, more salt, and fat. Its processed meat left over from butchering the animal into more expensive cuts. When fried it does not taste all that bad, and when cut into small chunks and added to fried rice it tastes a lot like pork fried rice.
Here is the recipe:
Ingredients:
- Can of Spam or other canned meat product
- 1 – 2 onions, if desired
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon salt
- Pepper to taste
- 4 tablespoons oil for stir-frying, or as needed
- 4 cups cold cooked rice
- 1 – 2 tablespoons light soy sauce or oyster sauce, as desired
Preparation:
- Cook 4 cups of rice
- Wash and finely chop the onion.
- Open and dice the processed meat
- Lightly beat the eggs with the salt and peppers
- Heat frying pan and add 2 tablespoons oil.
- Fry processed meat (at this time I also add some dehydrated vegetables but that is a personal preference)
- Brown the onion. Once the onion is cooked add the rest of the oil
- Add the rice. Stir-fry for a few minutes, using chopsticks or a wooden spoon to break it apart. Stir in the soy sauce or oyster sauce as desired.
- Break the eggs into a cup and scramble. Add salt and pepper to taste.
- When the rice is heated through, add the raw scrambled egg into the pan. Mix thoroughly and cook until eggs are done.
