How to Replace a CETME Stock with HK Parts

I have done several basic gunsmith videos with my CETME rifle.  As I have said before it is a very decent and inexpensive 7.62×51 battle rifle. In this article what I am going to do is show you how to install a HK G3 stock set on your CETME rifle.

A CETME Stock Replacement with HK Parts really isn’t a necessary change to your gun.  However, I like having my equipment match.  I have a green Glock and wanted green furniture on my CETME.

I know this is borderline to breaking my “don’t modify your firearm without a purpose” rule.  However, the new stock has a place to hold the retaining pins during field stripping.  It also has a place for a sling both features my original black stock set did not.

There are a couple ways to use HK stocks on CETME rifles.  Some work better than others. If you can keep your CETME buffer do so.  It is a little better for your rifle.  The HK equipment is supposed to be easier to cock. In my experience neither are readily user apparent.

I tried to go the cheaper way from the first. I bought a green HK stock set and tried to bolt it directly to the CETME Buffer and recoil assembly. This did not work, some skilled individuals are able to grind away the internal stock to fit the buffer, as well as find the proper bolts.  The bolt that connects the buffer to the butt stock is larger and larger on the CETME. The buffer on a CETME also has a single bolt hole on its face, whereas a HK has two. I quickly gave up as I did not want to make any permanent alterations to my stock or my firearm

Next I ordered a HK buffer and install parts set. While this connected perfectly to the stock, the CEMTE recoil assembly is slightly different, and I could not the buffer to fit flush inside the assembly. I tried grinding some metal off of the upper buffer bolt hole so it would not catch on the recoil spring. But even with the buffer fitting in the recoil assembly, the lower bolt hole on the buffer did not line up with the single bolt hole on the CETME recoil assembly. I tried smoothing out and shaping inletted area of the butt stock to better fit the buffer tube, but it quickly came to the point where I had to decide to take my chances and majorly alter my parts or take a different approach.

What I did was to buy a G3 recoil assembly. This fit my CETME receiver perfectly. All I had to do was to sand down the nylon recoil spring bushing slightly so that it would fit in the bolt assembly. Being a HK part – the G3 buffer and the G3 stock bolted to it correctly.

Now I have a CETME Receiver, Trigger Assembly, and internals, with a HK G3 stock set mounted to a G3 Recoil Assembly with A G3 Buffer.

Not counting tax and shipping here are the parts and their costs from http://www.robertrtg.com/g3.html (once again they are not the only source – just the one I used)

Parts Ordered

3-Pack: German OD Green Surplus Stock Sets $30

Complete Recoil Assembly complete and assembled $24

Nylon Guide Ring Surplus $2.50 (I bought a few nylon buffers just in case I damaged one shaping it to fit but I did not need them)

Buffer $6 (complete with internal parts)

Mounting Hardware Set $6.50 (3-screws, 3-washers, lock plate)

Large Push Pin $2.25 (While I was at it, I also got 2 new large retaining pins for the buttstock)

Total

$77 (plus tax and shipping)

I am pretty pleased with the results.  In my opinion. the rifle looks really nice with the green furniture.  I am thinking about welding on a HK Shell Deflector or a port buffer to keep the brass from getting thrown into the next county, and I may get a scope mount.  However, I probably won’t as I like iron sights.

All in all, it was a nice project.  I am quite pleased with the gun.  Now that it is looking good, and I bought several action proving dummy rounds I am going to start collecting magazines.  I also need to look for a good way to accumulate some 7.62 NATO rounds.

Army Pro Tips: How to Call Your Shots

Obviously this is not my video, this is a video from the US Army Marksmanship team and it shows an amazing first person look at what Travis’s sights look like when he breaks a shot, a course on how to call your shots from one of the best.

Knowing how to call your shots is a vital skill that you need if you want to improve your shooting skills.

What this does is allow you to know what you were doing at the moment you fired the shot, by knowing this and the shooting fundamentals you can instantly know where your shot went so you can make adjustments to get the next one where you want it to go.

As a young marine, the ability to call shots was emphasied to me on the rifle range, to the point that I (along with every other Marine recruit) was issues a small ledger that allowed me to copy down how my sights were set, the wind,  where my shot landed, and where I thought it would land.

Proper use of this book would allow me to grow in my shooting skills and become a better marksman.

Like that book, listening to the shooter in the video below will help you become a better shooter.

Handgun Ammunition Considerations Course Video

I am not posting a full article with his handgun ammo video.

This is an experiment making videos using my class PowerPoint presentations. I did feel the need to be a little more brief in my explanations of the slides than I normally am in class, but that’s because in class, with me jumping around and passing around training aids it takes me about 45 minutes to an hour to describe the concepts I posted here. I don’t think I can keep a YouTube Audience interested for an hour long handgun ammunition video.

As always, these videos do not take the place of live interaction with a qualified instructor. This is just another attempt to use a new medium to help give a new shooter a starting point in their training so they may feel a little more comfortable in a formal class.

I enjoyed the process of taking presentations I use in my handgun classes and turning them into YouTube videos – however, it is hard taking slides that are for a 8, 11, or 17 hour class and cutting them down to 3o minutes or so.

I left out a lot, and since I have no way to gauge understanding, then there is no way this video (or any like it) takes the place of a real class.

Judge Not

I have something weighing on my mind; it’s probably a rant, so I am going to give fair warning. If you read this site, you may have (if not then I’m not doing a good job of expressing myself) noticed I am a rather conservative Christian. So far warning, if you don’t want to hear my opinion on the current direction of the American culture then don’t click the “read more” link below, and wait a day or so to read my next how to article. Otherwise please enjoy the first of a three part series.

I titled this post as “Judge Not” and I want to make three points. Due to the nature of this article I have decided to break it into three individual posts each covering one point.

  1. I want to describe what my interpretation of the Biblical concept, “Judge not or you too will be judged”.
  2. I would like to discuss my interpretation for the progressive term “Tolerance”
  3. I want to make the point why I believe progressives are so angry with conservative beliefs, as well as why they are so enamored with mainstreaming deviant lifestyles.

First off, let me tell you, I know that I screw up, and do some pretty stupid things. I like to think that I try to do what’s right, but on occasion laziness wins out. I am no moral authority, and on judgment day there are going to be several actions that I have done in the past I will be ashamed to be reminded of.

However, I know I do not have to be perfect because Jesus made the choice to take the consequences of my actions by dying for me to clean me of my sin. Because of the gratitude I have for this I do my best to follow the rules he set down for me so as not to be disrespectful of the gift.

The scripture ““Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Speaks to me in a way that says “Hey stupid, you screw up enough on your own to go around and point out other people’s faults – just shut up and work on yourself”…

There are several things believe to be wrong, but I try to keep my mouth shut about them because its not my place to be the judge. Anything you do that only has consequences for yourself and other consenting adults I shut my mouth about. Recently this leaves images of homosexuality, but that’s just one action that I personally fell is wrong, but that I don’t speak to people about. I also mean recreational drug use – PERSONALLY I feel it’s a refuge of the weak minded, but I think you should be able to grow, smoke, snort whatever you want as long as you can afford it, and know you’re legally responsible for your actions while high.

If you choose to buy a Harley instead of health insurance, and ride it without a helmet, I won’t say a word, because its not my place to do so.

So here it is, I believe, based upon my own study, that the “or you too will be judged” doesn’t mean by other people – or based upon your own sins. I believe that means you’re working outside your “paygrade” and insulting Jesus by trying to do something that only He has earned the right to do.

To put it in perspective take a day and go sit in a courtroom, listen to a case, and right as the judge is about to pronounce his judgment blurt out your opinion. I bet you the point will be illustrated by an apoplectic judge and a very firm bailiff.

Army Pro Shooting Tips: How to Speed Reload a Pistol

Army Pro Shooting Tips: How to Speed Reload a Pistol

This YouTube video is of Corporal Travis Tomasie of the United States Army Marksmanship Unit teaching the speed reload.

I have shared other videos of Tomasie performing a speed reload.  His speed seems amazing, and it is pretty impressive, but it is doable if you have the same drive and devotion to practice that he has.

There is nothing fancy or impossible about his speed.  It is simple the result of perfect practice repeated repeatedly.

Learn From the Best – Practice What You Learn

If you want to know how to speed reload a pistol watch the video and learn from a great shooter.

If you want to speed reload quickly apply that knowledge with hours of practice.

One thing I would add to this video concerns practice.  I like to stand over my bed so that my magazines land on the bed.  I don’t do this because I am afraid of hurting them when they hit the floor.  I do that because it saves me time picking them back up so I get more practice in a single session.

I load up my belt with all my magazine holders and go through each magazine and then pick up all the magazines and restart.

It is also helpful to ensure at least one dummy is in the magazine.

Practice Constantly: It is the Cost of Competency

Practice over and over until you get your speed to where you want it and then practice more because you won’t function perfectly under stress.

If this sounds like overkill in discussing the need for practice then practice until you get it.  I cannot stress enough how speed like this is achieved only though dedicated practice that is done perfectly.

Don’t slap dash through it and try to get speed by sloppy action.  It won’t happen.  Go slow and be precise in your movements. A thousand half speed repetitions will build speed faster than anything else you can do.  Whereas sloppy repetitions done under what you think is extreme speed will make you perform worse.
